Letter to the Editor
Recently our campus has become divided again around a 6-year-old issue. With court challenges, referendum questions and ongoing campus debate I have found myself disappointed. As students we have forgotten what binds us together — our pride in the University of Illinois.
All of us on this campus made the decision to pursue our education here, even without a mascot in place. As Illini, we fight each day to achieve our best on the court, in the classroom and in the community.
Why should we diminish our collective strength to rehash issues of the past?
That is why I would like to commend Katie Chan for her leadership with The 1867 Society and the Student Alumni Ambassadors for starting a new tradition all students can be proud of.

“I Love Illinois” Week is about all Illini coming together to share their passion for our University. With graduation in sight for me, I am excited to see a new tradition formed that will continue to be celebrated for years to come. As this first year’s week wraps up Thursday I would encourage you to join in the celebration at 11 a.m. on the Quad to celebrate our Alma Mater’s 146th birthday.
No matter where you stand on the issues, together we are the Fighting Illini regardless of who represents our teams.
