According to a release from the University New Bureau, renovations on the Alma Mater will need more time than previously thought. The statue was slated to return to campus on May 4, in time for commencement, but it is not predicted to return until the 2014 academic year.
The statue is currently being restored at the Conservation of Sculpture and Objects Studio in Forest Park, Ill. The original cost to renovate the statue was $99,962, but has increased to no more than $360,000, which will be paid with alumni funds.
In place of the Alma Mater, the University plans to have many smaller replicas on campus for graduates to use for photographs following graduation ceremonies.
“Each replica will have a little different personality,” Robin Kaler, campus spokeswoman, said in the release. “We’ll post a map of the locations on the Commencement website so students can easily find them and get pictures with one or all of them.”
Replicas of the Alma Mater will be created by the University’s department of art and design.
