As discussions regarding a shared governance survey continued at Monday’s Senate Executive Committee meeting, members showed support for implementing such a survey in the near future.
The committee unanimously voted in favor of formally supporting the Survey on Shared Governance, a web-based poll for faculty members regarding the state of shared governance at the department and college levels.
Although the SEC will be an official sponsor of the survey, the Senate’s General University Policy Committee will administer the survey and issue a report of its results to the SEC.
Nicholas Burbules, chair of the Senate’s General University Policy Committee, introduced the idea for the survey at the SEC meeting in February. He said the need for the survey emerged because the senate had not conducted such a survey before; therefore, reports on the state of shared governance at the unit level are not on record.
The survey would be anonymous and would not require faculty to identify their department or college. If the committee finds any major issues or general trends upon reviewing the results, members will choose an appropriate follow-up, Burbules said.

He said once the survey is active, he hopes all members of the Urbana-Champaign Senate will encourage faculty members in their departments to participate.
