Following the dissolution of an injunction holding the Chief Illiniwek referendum results from being released, results show a majority of students reaffirmed their support of the mascot.
More than 9,000 students voted in favor and more than 2,500 voted against the referendum question.
The Moot Court Board Judiciary dissolved the injunction prior to an Illinois Student Senate appeal. The injunction’s dissolution followed a motion by student senator Matthew Paarlberg to remove it. Paarlberg’s motion was denied, but Justice Tyler Anthony said his motion brought defects in the original injunction to light.
Anthony said the Campus Student Election Commission is not party to the case between appellant Josh Good and appellee David Pileski on behalf of the Illinois Student Senate; as such, the court does not have the authority to enjoin the CSEC from publishing election results.
The judiciary is still deliberating on the ISS appeal.
