Update: 5:35 p.m.: The main break was fixed and traffic reopened at around 3 p.m., according to Cotton.
Illinois American Water shut down Green Street between First and Second streets Wednesday morning to perform an emergency water main repair.
The city of Champaign, Illinois American Water and Broeren Russo are working on the repair and the control of traffic in the area. The city of Champaign anticipates the street will reopen by Wednesday evening, according to a news release.
A water main break at Green and Second Street caused the roadway to drop slightly, said Karen Cotton, external affairs manager at Illinois American Water.
Cotton said that changes in weather can affect pipes and conditions of the mains as they age.

“It’s not an uncommon occurrence to have a main break or a main leak,” Cotton said, adding that many of the city’s water mains are 50-70 years old.
By the end of the workday, both lanes will be reopened, the news release said.
