A Champaign man appeared in court on Tuesday on multiple charges after police say he arrived at Assembly Hall on Saturday night with five weapons.
Kenneth Bergman, 64, of Champaign, was arrested Saturday night on the charges of unlawful use of weapons, unlawful storage of weapons and disorderly conduct. According to the report by University police, Bergman falsely claimed to be part of the security team at Assembly Hall.
Roy Acree, UIPD Captain, said Bergman arrived at Winter Jam, a Christian music concert, taking place at Assembly Hall on Saturday. Bergman, who was wearing a trench coat that covered his weaponry, was arrested by University police around 9 p.m. Saturday and taken to the Champaign County Jail. He is still being held on bond.
“Once we were made aware of the situation, officers were able to locate him and they did ask if he had some type of gun or Taser on him,” Acree said.
Bergman stated that he had a Taser, and the rest of the weapons were found at that time. According to the report, he was also in possession of two 6-inch knives, a spring-loaded expandable baton, a can of pepper spray, a razor blade and two live rounds of ammunition.

Acree said that while police don’t know what Bergman’s intent was, they are positive he was acting on his own and is not part of any group or terrorist organization.
Saturday was UIPD’s second encounter with Bergman. Police previously encountered Bergman on March 7 outside the Illini Union, 1401 W. Green St., during a rally held by the local chapter of the Service Employees International Union. A board of trustees meeting also took place at the Illini Union that day.
Bergman was also wearing a trench coat that day. Police checked his identification card but did not frisk him. The encounter did not result in a police report.
