As we approach the implementation of the Affordable Care Act’s major provisions in 2014, the insurance industry has begun spreading rumors of “rate shock” — sharp increases in premiums that will supposedly hit young adults.
Despite these claims, a study released this March by the Urban Institute found that young adults will not face dramatic spikes in premium rates. According to the study, 92 percent of young adults enrolling in a marketplace-based plan qualify for subsidies provided by the ACA to offset potential rate increases.
As a 21-year-old wading through an uncertain job market, it’s reassuring to know that the ACA offers subsidies to protect me from “rate shock” once I’m off my parents insurance.
The beauty of the ACA is that it makes coverage affordable for those who need it, provides comprehensive benefits and offers peace of mind to people who will no longer fear bankruptcy simply because they get sick and go to the doctor. Don’t buy into the insurance industry’s crock of “rate shock”; affordable health care will soon be a reality for America’s young adults.
