As I was driving on campus today, I heard an advertisement on WPGU for Drew’s Pizza. The ad portrayed two gentlemen who appeared to be smoking marijuana, and mentioned ordering Drew’s Pizza to satisfy their munchies on 4/20.
While our society is certainly moving toward liberalizing cannabis policies, smoking marijuana remains illegal, and 4/20 is a holiday surrounding an illegal activity. In a sense, WPGU is earning money off of advertisements that condone illegal drug use.
Given that non-refundable student fees will soon subsidize the Illini Media Company, I believe that it should act with more tact in the future when approving advertisements. Until then, I will not be a listener.
