The Center for Translation Studies will offer a new master’s program in the fall that will train students to become translators and interpreters, according a report by the University News Bureau.
“We’re excited about this new graduate degree,” Elizabeth Lowe, director of the Center for Translation Studies, said in the report.
The new program will offer online and on-campus courses, which will have the same timeline and meet the same requirements. However, on-campus students will be required to take two, concurrent 16-week courses while online students will have the option to take two, consecutive eight-week courses.
“We anticipate a national and international audience for the online program,” Lowe said in the report.
There is a growing demand for translators and interpreters because all agencies that receive federal funding are required by law to make their programs accessible to non-English speakers, according to the report.

The announcement came after the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics predicted that career opportunities in this field would grow by about 20 percent between 2010 and 2020, and the Illinois Department of Employment Security projected an increase of 37 percent during the same period, according to the report.
