Renovations on Smith Memorial Hall will begin January 2014 with no specific end date set as of yet.
The building will not be completely closed during construction.
“Areas of the building will be closed as needed throughout the renovation,” said Andy Blacker, manager of external relations for Facilities and Services.
The hall has a budget of $5.5 million as it goes through renovations, Blacker said.
“This is considered a capital project and has a broad scope of work,” Blacker said.

There are many different components to this project that will address deferred maintenance issues on the exterior of Smith Hall including window replacement, re-pointing the exterior envelope and replacing old gutters and downspouts.
The roof will be replaced, four redundant ventilators will be replaced, the electrical systems will be upgraded to new air handling units and practice room ventilation distribution systems will be replaced as well. Visual strobes will be installed on fire alarm signals, there will be some lighting upgrades and restroom upgrades, Blacker said.
Booth Hansen is the firm managing the renovations. Hansen is also managing other renovation projects on campus including Nugent Hall, Student Dining and Residential Programs Building, the Ikenberry Commons, Christopher Hall and the North Campus Parking and Retail Building.
The University has a long-standing relationship with Hansen, Blacker said.
Hansen could not be reached to comment on the renovations.
