Two of the Illinois football team’s top returnees are no longer with the team, said on Thursday Kent Brown, associate athletic director for media relations.
Wide receiver Darius Millines and defensive end Darrius Caldwell have been dismissed for an unspecified violation of team rules.
Millines was the No. 1 receiver on Illinois’ depth chart, and No. 2 receiver in productivity behind Ryan Lankford with 32 catches for 319 yards last season. He has struggled with injuries throughout his career, but, if he were to remain healthy, Millines was expected to top the depth chart once again.
Caldwell was forced to sit out this spring due to academics, but recorded 17 tackles and 2.5 sacks in 12 games last season. He likely would have started at the Leo position, a mix between defensive end and linebacker, this season. His spot will likely be filled by Houston Bates.
