In the wake of Brad Stevens’ departure, Butler named former Illinois assistant Brandon Miller as the head coach of its basketball program Saturday.
Stevens accepted the call to become the coach to succeed Doc Rivers in the Boston Celtics organization last week and the Bulldogs wasted no time in naming a replacement for Steven’s seat.
An alumni of the institution, Miller was a point guard for the Bulldogs basketball team and graduated from Butler in 2003. After a successful freshman year at Southwest Missouri State in which the team advanced to the Sweet 16 of the NCAA tournament, he transferred to Butler. At Butler, he started all 97 games of his career. During those three years at Butler, he scored over 1,000 points and finished in the school’s all-time top-five in both made 3-point field goals and assists.
Miller followed his college career with this current coaching career, joining his alma mater’s coaching staff as an assistant coach for the 2007-08 basketball season. The team attained a record of 30-4 that season and was, at one point in the season, ranked eighth in the country. After this stint, he was hired to be Thad Matta’s assistant at Ohio State and remained there until last season when he joined Illinois head coach John Groce’s staff. In his season with the Illini, the team fell five points short of a Sweet 16 appearance.
Miller will have lofty footsteps to follow as Stevens had pushed Butler to the forefront of the college basketball media in recent years. Third-year head coach Stevens broke the NCAA record for most wins in a coach’s first three years in 2010. He followed that with a run to Butler’s first Final Four appearance and national championship game in the NCAA tournament. He then repeated that feet in the 2010-11 season.
