The energy conservation goals in the Illinois Climate Action plan were surpassed last year, leading Illinois closer to the plan’s main goal: carbon neutrality by 2050.
The plan, which the University committed to by signing the American College and University Presidents’ Climate Commitment in 2008, set target goals of 20 percent water reduction and 20 percent energy reduction by 2015. Last year, water use was reduced by 21 percent, and energy use by 19 percent.
“I believe this exceptional progress is due to the efforts of many,” said Stephanie Lage, assistant director at the Center for a Sustainable Environment.
One of the projects to reduce energy is retro-commissioning the buildings, which will entail fixing equipment in buildings to make them more efficient. Lage said the retro-commissioning team had already been through 35 buildings on campus.
During a Sustainability Week discussion last year, Chancellor Phyllis Wise said the University pledged to be the first research University in the United States to use energy efficient LED lights.

In terms of water reduction, Lage said that several projects contributed to their success, such as the use of low flow fixtures, leak identification and repair, and retro-commissioning work. “There are so many projects going on, and they are spread over time,” said Morgan Johnston, sustainability coordinator at Facilities. “Students can always suggest projects and come talk to us or communicate with Students for Environmental Concerns.”
She said students can contribute to the water and energy reduction goals by getting active in using the recycling bins, reusing and recycling electronic waste. She also hopes students will participate in the restoration of the prairie on Florida Avenue and Orchard Street.
“We’d also like to get student’s ideas about green teams together,” Johnston said. “Green teams are groups of people who care about sustainability for campus and the community.”
Starting on Aug. 26, the Center for a Sustainable Environment will be hosting a week of meet and greet coffee hours from 10-11 a.m. in the Illini Union for students interested in learning about sustainability efforts at the University. Students can sign up to help with an existing project in the Illinois Climate Action Plan or start their own environmental initiative.
“Success in meeting these targets should be credited to the entire campus, faculty, staff, and students alike,” Lage said. “Continued engagements in conservation practices and projects will enable campus to meet the goals set forth in the Illinois Climate Action Plan.”
