National Weather Service warns of icy roads, sidewalks

Last updated on May 7, 2016 at 10:36 p.m.

Areas of freezing fog are creating slick travel conditions late this evening, according to a special weather statement issued by the National Weather Service at around 8:30 Monday night.

Illinois towns including Champaign, Urbana, Bloomington, Normal, Lincoln, Danville, Springfield, Taylorville, Decatur, Charleston, Mattoon, Shelbyville and Effingham will be affected, according to the statement.

The statement warns of thin layers of ice and slippery spots on roadways, caused by foggy conditions and temperatures in the lower to middle 20s. Sidewalks and parking lots may also be icy, so people are advised to be cautious when driving and walking.

The low visibility from the fog is expected to improve at around 10 p.m. in central Illinois, and shortly after midnight in eastern Illinois.
