Fire reported at Empire Chinese Restaurant

By Daily Illini Staff Report

Champaign firefighters responded to a fire at Empire Chinese Restaurant, 410 E. Green St. at 4:17 p.m.

When firefighters arrived on scene they found smoke coming from the front of the building, according to a press release from the Champaign Fire Department.

The fire initially started in the restaurant’s kitchen and although the extinguishing system went off, it didn’t completely put off the fire, said John Koller, Champaign Fire Marshal.

He said crews were clearing out the apartments at the complex, making sure everyone was safe. No one was injured.

Seven fire trucks, four chief officers, and an ambulance reported to the scene because of the complex’s large size.

The fire was ruled an accidental cooking fire and caused an estimated $15,000 in damages and there was no damage to the building, according to the release.
