Construction is set to begin on Lot J, 524 E. Green St., by May 1, according to a press release from the city of Champaign’s Planning and Development office. The effort will turn the parking lot into a public parking garage, Marriott TownePlace Suites, apartment units and retail space.

Parking Lot J will be closed to the public starting at 6 p.m. on April 16. Alternative parking can be found at 503 E. Healey St., 508 E. Healey St. and at the northeast corner of Springfield Avenue and Sixth Street.

Metered parking can be found along city streets and in University parking lots A9 and C3, located at the southeast corner of Sixth and Healey streets and near the southeast corner of Sixth and John streets.

The new additions to Green Street are a part of a larger project approved by City Council in February.

The project includes a six-story hotel building along Green Street, a six-story apartment building along Sixth Street, a 131-space public parking garage that will be constructed on Healey Street and new retail space on Sixth and Green streets, according to the press release.

Sixth and Green streets will remain open at all times during construction.
