Champaign DMV closes
November 14, 2014
The Champaign Department of Motor Vehicles facility closed on Nov. 9 due to air quality concerns.
Students are being advised to instead go to DMV locations in Rantoul, Tuscola, Monticello, Bloomington or Tilton. Monticello, the nearest DMV location, is a 30 minute drive for students who have cars.
Students, who are unable to drive to other DMV locations, can go to the Illini Union to access DMV services. Once a month, the Secretary of State’s office sets up a mobile unit in Room 407 in the Illini Union from 9:30 a.m. to 3 p.m.
The unit offers services such as renewing drivers licenses, registering for organ and tissue donations, vehicle ticket sales and vehicle titles and registration.
Rachel Farrer, Assistant Press Secretary for the Illinois Secretary of State, said that the office, “advise(s) people to take advantage of the mobile unit, especially now that the Champaign DMV is closed.”

Farrer said that the office expects that more people will be taking advantage of the mobile unit’s services because of the Champaign DMV closing and more work stations are being added as a precaution.
Students should be cognizant of potential wait times, as Farrer said that even before the Champaign DMV closed, “The University of Illinois has probably received the most visits each month (out of all colleges in the state.)”

Editor’s note: A previous version of this article incorrectly stated the mobile unit in Room 407 of the Illini Union will open at 9 a.m. The mobile unit will open at 9:30 a.m. The Daily Illini regrets the error.
