The Illini landed their third safety commitment of the 2025 recruiting class as 5-foot-11, 165-pound Tywan Cox flipped from USF on Monday evening. Cox joins his brother, Torrie Cox Jr., a junior cornerback for Illinois. Their father, Torrie Cox, is a six-year NFL veteran who spent his entire career with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.
Tywan Cox is ranked as the No. 70 safety recruit in the nation and the No. 107 overall player in Florida. As a student at Northwestern High School in Miami, Florida, he is also a standout track athlete, holding the fastest times in both 200 meters and 400 meters at the Sam Burley Hall of Fame Invitational.
Like his brother, he’s slightly undersized, weighing just 165 pounds. However, his agility and speed should make him a fundamental part of Illinois’ efforts next season.
His commitment follows Illinois’ tough 25-17 loss to Minnesota, where the defense struggled. Illinois has significant depth at the safety position with no active seniors on the depth chart. It will look to Tywan Cox’s athleticism to strengthen the defense.
