“Eternal Atake 2” — Lil Uzi Vert
Lil Uzi Vert just dropped their fourth studio album, following up on 2020’s acclaimed “Eternal Atake” with “Eternal Atake 2.” This 16-track album showcases heavy, atmospheric production with coarse beats and unpredictable flows. “Gorgeous” — Snoop Dogg, Dr. Dre ft. Jhené Aiko
Acclaimed duo Snoop Dogg and Dr. Dre reunite for their first joint album in over 30 years, “Missionary,” set for release this December. The album’s first single, “Gorgeous,” featuring Jhené Aiko, is a timeless hip-hop track that highlights Snoop and Dre’s collaborative genius. With a nostalgic sound of old-school hip-hop, Jhené Aiko’s silky vocals bring an expressive R&B vibe that effortlessly glides over the beat.
“Punish” — Ethel Cain
Beginning with the eerie sounds of people speaking followed by the discordant backing of the piano, Ethel Cain’s newest release “Punish” is six minutes of pure melancholia. Its minimal production sound is tormented by Cain’s wistful vocals, before crescendoing into a wall of sound. “Punish” is the first single of Cain’s upcoming album “Perverts,” set to be released Jan. 8, 2025.
“delusional” — Ken Carson
Ken Carson’s usual chaotically gritty sound is amplified on “delusional,” an unrestrained single detailing Carson’s fondness for mosh pits and women. Lyrically, it’s simple, featuring straightforward lyricism that doesn’t hold much depth, but it’s intensely elaborate sonically. Layered sounds and thumping bass combine with a punchy beat to create an immersive and unbridled atmosphere.
“I’m With The Band” — The Black Keys ft. Beck
The Black Keys’s newest song, “I’m With The Band,” is one of several bonus tracks from their 2024 album “Ohio Players.” The song is an illustrious anthem that encompasses a psychedelic ’70s rock feel, driven by thunderous beats and full-bodied guitar solos that create an enthusiastic and electric track.
“Image (Grimes Special)” — Magdalena Bay, Grimes
From an already experimental album, Magdalena Bay’s new collaboration with Grimes further explores the synth-pop genre on “Image (Grimes Special).” The song takes a darker tone, driven by a low drum line that encapsulates the feeling of dark fantasy and ’80s sci-fi. Grimes fits perfectly into the glitchy and electronic track and complements the deep synth and rhythm with her signature high and airy vocals.
“Comfort Me” — Malcolm Todd
Malcolm Todd’s newest single “Comfort Me” is groovy, infectious and sensual. His breathy voice drips with suggestion as he sings along a simple but heat-charged instrumental. The bassline and drums mimic classic ’70s disco and love jams but retain an electronic feel that makes the piece feel right at home in the modern soundscape.
“Santa Baby” — Laufey
Mirroring the likes of Mariah Carey, Laufey has solidly declared a beginning to the holiday season with her new cover of “Santa Baby,” which has been added to the rerelease of last year’s “A Very Laufey Holiday” EP. The track is impossibly jazzy and poppy, with a quick time signature and key changes to keep listeners excited. Laufey plays the part of the ingenue well, maintaining restraint as she tiptoes around the track and reflects on its simplicity.
“Charlie” — Lola Young ft. Lil Yachty
Lola Young and Lil Yachty join together on their newest single “Charlie,” a tropical and psychedelic love song. The track itself is languid and sultry, giving the entire song a relaxing, summery feel, even as November begins. Young’s vocals are yearning and powerful, but reserved, as they rise above the instrumentation to become the star of the song. Yachty’s verse is short but sweet, altering the song’s rhythm to excite Young’s powerful and smooth final chorus.
“liminal space” — mxmtoon
In her announcement of the album, mxmtoon explained that “liminal space” is meant to explore emotions revolving around growth and change, specifically for women. The album matches this theme well, using folk and country themes to capture a sense of Americana that reflects well upon a search for identity and turmoil, while simultaneously retaining mxmtoon’s classic indie voice. Confident vocals meet rich instrumentals to create a product worth remembering.
