Dodgeball gets dirty

By Jim Vorel

On Friday, New Life Volunteering Society will be hosting an unusual charity event called “Dirty Dodgeball”. The event, which will be taking place at 4 p.m. at Fraternity Park, 1010 S. Second St. Champaign, is a twist on regular dodgeball.

The balls will be soaked in condiments and messy food products.

“We’re going to soak the balls in huge quantities of anything gross that we can get our hands on; ketchup, mustard, relish, mayo, you name it,” said Sarah Bluhm, the fundraising coordinator for New Life Volunteering Society. The courts, which will be on the grass of Frat Park, will also be coated in messy, slippery condiments in an effort to get players as dirty as possible.

New Life Volunteering Society is a registered student organization in its second year on campus. Their targets are the homeless and hungry as well as mentally and physically challenged and underprivileged children. Half of the money raised by the event will go to local area charities, while a quarter will go towards funding future programs and a quarter will go to the New Life Volunteering Society national chapter.

Cost to register a team of five for the event is $75, or $15 per player. For their registration fee each participant will receive a T-shirt and dinner from Chipotle, as well as a Chipotle gift card. Grand prizes for tournament winners are yet to be determined.
