Marathon could bring $1 million to Champaign-Urbana

This Illini Radio Group is predicting that Saturday’s marathon will bring money into the Champaign-Urbana community.

The group, which is helping marathon organizer with the event, said the cities could bring in up to $1 million because of hotel stays and food purchases.

“We became associated as the exclusive radio sponsor of the marathon the day they spoke with us about it because we immediately saw this as a home run event that could quickly become Champaign Urbana’s signature event,” said Alan Beck, Illini Radio Group general manager. “It promotes our area, which is good for everyone. We far exceeded participant expectations this first year and we think the Illinois Marathon will grow into one of the premier events in the country.”

Approximately 9,500 people are competing in one of the weekend’s four races. There is a marathon, a half marathon, and two races for children.
