New Urbana-Champaign Senate meets, makes committee appointments

By Bridget Mulcahy

The Urbana-Champaign Senate met for the first time since new members were elected in March.

Kim Graver, chair of the committee on committees, presented the Senate with a slate of recommended nominees. The committee on committees facilitated the appointment and nomination process. One nomination from the floor was made on behalf of George Francis to serve on behalf of the information technologies committee. The nomination was granted.

Do to the overwhelming response of senators the committee on committees could not place all of the senators on a committee, Graver said.

The three nominations for membership on the University Senate’s Conference went unchallenged. James Barrett, Rory Campbell, and George Francis were elected to serve on this Conference, which is composed of representatives from all three University of Illinois campuses. These representatives meet with University President B. Joseph White to discuss issues dealing with the University of Illinois system.

Former Senate Executive Committee Chair Nick Burbules was elected as a member of the University Senate Conference to serve on the Senate Executive Committee. The Senate Executive Committee organizes meetings and acts on behalf of the Senate when the body is not in session.

Jeffery Dawson, Tom Overbye and Alex Scheeline were elected as committee chairs to serve on the Senate Executive Committee.

After appointing members to committees the Senate discussed goals for the term.

The Senate is trying to shorten and simplify their agenda so they can have more streamlined meetings and take care of things more efficiently, Burbules said.

He encourages the committees to have solid proposals before presenting anything to the Senate.

“It facilitates careful and thoughtful decision making,” Burbules said.
