Police make armed robbery arrest

Champaign Police arrested a suspect in connection with an armed robbery that occurred at the Meijer Gas Station, 2201 N. Prospect Ave., on Friday.

Urbana City Council approves recycling center

Urbana City Council members unanimously approved agreements with Mervis Industries, Inc. and the Illinois Department of Transportation, allowing for the construction of a public drop-off and buy-back recycling center at their rescheduled council meeting on Tuesday.

Woman jumps from bridge over I-74

A 46-year-old Rantoul woman jumped from the Neil Street Bridge over Interstate 74 around 1 p.m. Monday. She was pronounced dead at the scene.

Sidewalk snow-removal required in areas of Urbana

Urbana will now require property owners in portions of campus, downtown Urbana and Philo Road to remove snow from their sidewalks for accumulations exceeding two inches. The ordinance, passed by the Urbana City Council at its Monday meeting, will use these areas as tests for a possible citywide ordinance in the future.

Council to vote about landfill usage in Urbana

Urbana City Council will vote to authorize an intergovernmental agreement to challenge expected changes to "Clinton Landfill":http://urbanaillinois.us/sites/default/files/attachments/resolution-2011-11-042r_0.pdf at its meeting Monday evening. Local communities would work together to protest an EPA permit that would allow the landfill to begin storing polychlorinated biphenyls, “a known carcinogen,” according to the resolution. The landfill is situated on top of the Mahomet Aquifer and “poses an unacceptable risk” of contaminating the drinking water for 750,000 people in 15 counties.
