‘Heart of Giving’ raises money for tsunami at relief concert

By Frank Vanderwall

A tsunami relief concert called “The Heart of Giving” that featured DJ Asiatic was held Saturday at the Canopy Club.

The event was an attempt to bring the community together to raise funds for the tsunami disaster victims.

Money raised came from the $10 cover charge, 30 percent of which went directly to the American Red Cross. The event also featured a canned food and a clothing donation drive.

“The event was a success, and we hope to donate about $1,000 to the American Red Cross International Response fund,” said Anthony Rossi, general manager of the Canopy Club.

The main attraction of the night was DJ Asiatic, presented by Tsunami Entertainment. Giving back to the community is not a new concept for DJ Asiatic.

“If you can contribute a percentage of every show to people in need; that helps out a lot. You’re giving something back to the world,” he said.

Rossi agreed, saying that the event encouraged people both to go out for a good time and to give something back to the community.

Attendees enjoyed the music and atmosphere as large groups of students swayed to the beats of DJ Asiatic on the dance floor. The students in attendance were also enthusiastic about the charity aspect of the event.

“Having fun dancing with your friends while giving to the tsunami relief fund is great, it’s like a two for one deal,” said Karthik Balaji, freshman in LAS.

Having a well-known local DJ like DJ Asiatic helped to increase the attendance.

“(DJ Asiatic) always draws real well when he plays here,” Rossi said.

Tsunami Entertainment and DJ Asiatic will continue to put on charitable events in the future.

“People are in need in the community, and we are just trying to help,” said Nilay Patel, Tsunami Entertainment’s head promoter.

The organization is currently working on a community event with the Champaign Park District this spring and another event to benefit the University later this year.

The Canopy Club will also continue to follow its trend of hosting charitable events.

“We have done lots of shows for charity in the past, giving to organizations like Habitat for Humanity and the Independent Media Center, and we plan to continue this trend,” Rossi said.
