A cyclist was hit by a Champaign-Urbana Mass Transit District bus at 1:03 p.m. on Aug. 31, while riding on a sidewalk along Lincoln Avenue.

Negar Kiyavash, graduate student, entered Lincoln Avenue from the Lincoln Avenue Residence Hall driveway when Pamela Martini of Urbana, the MTD bus driver, scraped against the right side of her according to an Urbana Police report.

According to the police report, Martini did not see the contact with Kiyavash but remembers passing the bike, which was still in the driveway of LAR at the time. One witness said it looked as though Martini was not paying attention to traffic, according to the police report.

Chia Au, freshman in LAS, who was on the bus when the accident occurred, said she was stunned at what happened. Kiyavash fell off the bike and sat on the ground looking at her arms like she had some injuries on them, Au said.

“(The bus driver) immediately stopped the bus and looked at how (Kiyavash) was doing,” Au said. “(Martini) seemed scared and the girl seemed hurt.”

According to the police report, Kiyavash was treated and released at the scene by paramedics and Martini sustained no injuries.
