By Jonathan Jacobson

A fire in Champaign on Monday evening left a 3-year-old boy dead at the scene and injured two fire personnel.

According to a fire department report, firefighters were dispatched at 8:45 p.m. to 1313 Hedge Rd., where they saw fire coming from a northwest room of the single story home. Three residents had escaped the fire and were in the front yard. They then informed the fire personnel that a child was still inside the house.

The fire was controlled, but the coroner pronounced the child dead at the scene at 9:25 p.m.

One firefighter experienced back pain and was taken to a hospital, treated and then released. A second firefighter received a cut to his hand and was treated at the scene.

The cause of the fire is currently under investigation by the Champaign Fire Investigation Unit along with the Champaign Police Department.
