Explosives discovered at Central Illinois high school

By The Associated Press

JACKSONVILLE, Ill. (AP) – A 15-year-old student has been arrested after authorities in central Illinois say he brought a suspicious device to Jacksonville High School.

Police Captain Steve Poole says the student is charged with possession of an explosive although investigators are still trying to determine if the baseball-sized device could have actually gone off.

Poole says the teen brought the device to school this morning, set it down outside and moved away. Other students noticed it and reported the situation to school officials.

The high school was evacuated, and the Illinois State Police bomb squad was brought in to investigate.

Classes later resumed for the school’s eleven-hundred students, and officials say they’re grateful to the teens who reported the device and averted a potentially dangerous situation.
