ON-AIR: Police advise students to be cautious late at night

By Ryan Sanders

Aggravated assaults and batteries on campus have decreased over the past year. These findings come from the latest crime data. Despite this, there is some worry. There’s been 13 robberies in the campus area since the beginning of the semester, 3 of which were at gunpoint. Assistant Chief of the University of Illinois Police Jeff Christensen says students need to pay attention.

“We encourage people to walk with a friend or walk near a group. Walk in well populated areas, walk in well lit areas. Try not to have your iPod cranked too loud or talking on your cell phone because you need to be alert. You take away that opportunity, they can’t commit the crime.”

Police say students shouldn’t worry – as long as people remain cautious, they should have no problem being safe when out late.
