ON-AIR: Males targeted in robberies and assaults
October 25, 2006
University males are the victims in the vast majority of the robbery and assault cases that occur in the campus district every year. This year alone, in twelve out of the thirteen reported crimes, men were the target. Graduate student in chemistry Aaron Lozano says the statistic is shocking.
“I’m surprised that that’s the number, I would probably walk with someone if that’s the case.”
Yet still, despite this information, most males on campus, including Senior in Biology Andrew Waymire, feel as though it will not happen to them.
“I assume that more males are like me, I assume that there’s a higher percentage of males walking alone at night and if there’s one male and one female walking alone at night there still is a better chance that the female will be the target.”
Making use of safe rides or safe walks, walking with a friend, parking in well lit areas and avoiding walking past construction sites are just some of the tips given by university police. Men and women equally have to be alert and aware, no matter your gender.
