ON-AIR: Concerns about student voting raise issues about polling places

By Kathleen Lambert

“Students don’t have time to wait around all day to vote, they’re busy. But we want students to vote and everyone talks about how it’s a problem that students aren’t voting yet no one is supplying enough polling places for the students.”

That was University of Illinois Student Senator Sophie Doroba.

Doroba is not alone with her concerns about student voter turnout. Student Senate President Ryan Ruzic also has anxiety.

“Students already have a difficult time getting the motivation between classes, their life, their work, to go out and vote and if voting requires them to stand in a line for two or more hours, they’re not gonna do it.”

Champaign County Clerk candidate Mike Richards believes that student voters are ignored in the community and feels that more effort needs to be made in Champaign County in order to get the students to the polls tomorrow.

“It’s simply not as big a priority as it should be. They have not adequately explained to first time voters on campus what they need to vote, where they need to vote. It’s a lack of preparedness. “

Champaign County Clerk Mark Sheldon states however, that the lines have not been, and will not be a problem on election day. He has no doubt that there are enough polling places on campus, and is hopeful that students will not be discouraged from voting because of the false rumors.

“Any voter in champaign county can call our office if they have a problem with lines at the polling place Student voters are no different than any other voter. If they have a complaint about what’s happened then they can call our office.”
