Crime statistics released for 2006

By Rose

The Division of Public Safety has released crime statistics for fall 2006. Reports show the U of I campus crime rate has decreased in all categories from previous semesters.

Assistant Chief of Police Jeff Christensen says police don’t want the declining statistics to create a false sense of security.

“Probably one of the major reasons why we can end up with a trend that is downward is because the community, the students, the faculty staff are exercising sound crime prevention practices. They’re taking away the opportunity for these person to person crimes to be committed.”

Christensen wants to urge people to continue to pay attention and exercise crime prevention.

He recommends drinking responsibly, walking in groups and staying in well lit areas.
