Illinois Student Senate treasurer resigns

By Riley Roberts

Ryan Ruzic, student body president and senior in LAS, has confirmed reports that Illinois Student Senate Treasurer Steven Benario has resigned.

“Steve is an engineering student and he’s extremely busy,” Ruzic said. “He decided that it would be best to step down.”

Benario, junior in engineering, came under fire scarcely two months ago when Senator Colin Bishop, senior in LAS, brought a resolution before ISS calling for Benario’s removal from office. At the time, questions of competency and commitment to Senate business were cited as reasons for the move.

An impeachment attempt failed, and no similar resolutions have since been introduced at ISS meetings.

Attempts to reach Bishop for comment were not immediately successful.

Specific reasons for Benario’s resignation, which comes a little more than a week before student elections, remain unclear. Further details, as well as statements from Benario and other ISS delegates, are expected within the next few days.
