Former Illini Ellis’ plea deal not reached

By Martha Spalding

A plea deal in the case of Jody Ellis, former receiver of the Illini football team, was not reached at a meeting today at the Champaign County Courthouse. Judge Thomas J. Difanis decided today that the case will continue to a pre-trial meeting on July 6 at 9 a.m.

Ellis was not present at the plea deal.

“Jody’s doing just fine,” Ellis’ attorney, Ed Piraino said outside the courtroom. “He was a good kid that got in a bad situation.”

Ellis and Derrick McPhearson, another former receiver, were originally charged with two counts of theft under $300 and four counts of residential burglary on March 5. Police discovered wallets, laptops, cell phones and other electronics in a suspected stolen car driven by Ellis during a traffic stop on the night of March 2.

McPhearson’s trial is scheduled for August 20.
