Champaign continues discussion on liquor ordinances

By Danielle Gaines

The Champaign city council conducted three non-binding poll votes on liqour-related ordinances Tuesday night.

The votes are intended to provide direction for future binding ordinances, city staff said.

The preliminary votes indicate the council would not support a ban on the sale of 750 mL wine bottles. Such an ordinance would effect “wine night” activities at campus bars.

A majority of the present members of the council would support legislation specifically prohibiting non-employees from serving alcohol at liquor establishments. That vote was 6-1, with one abstention.

The council would also support a ban on pre-poured shots by the same margins. This ordinance would prohibit the sale of alcohol by roaming “shot girls.”
