Champaign cancels Parade of Lights, tree lighting ceremony

By Kathleen Foody

The City of Champaign’s seventh annual Parade of Lights and tree lighting ceremony scheduled for Saturday evening was canceled this afternoon due to wet and icy weather conditions.

The ice developing on city roads led organizers to cancel the event and advise all volunteers, entries and participants not to come out to the parade or tree lighting ceremony in downtown Champaign.

The event will likely be rescheduled for either this weekend or next, said Katie Flint, parade coordinator.

Event organizers were contacting entries individually Saturday afternoon and hoped to reach everyone before they began bringing their floats downtown, she said.

The Virginia Theatre, 203 W. Park Ave., will still host showings of “National Lampoon’s Christmas Vacation.” The first is at 3:30 p.m. for free and the second is at 7:30 p.m. for $3 admission, according to a theatre employee.
