Candidate declared ineligible

By Sky Opila

Questions of eligibility may take one student trustee candidate off of next week’s student election ballot.

Dave Mangian, chairperson of the Student Election Commission, said John Unrug did not meet eligibility requirements to be on the ballot. However, Mangian said he could not comment on what specific requirement Unrug did not meet.

At time of press, Unrug said he did not know the details about being declared ineligible.

“I’m still on the ballot,” Unrug said when contacted Wednesday night.

Mangian said the commission was notified that a trustee candidate did not meet eligibility on Feb. 13. Mangian said he picked up the paperwork Tuesday that stated Unrug was the ineligible candidate and informed him via e-mail. Kevin Shields, vice chairperson of the commission, said this e-mail was sent out at 3 p.m., Tuesday.

The Office of the Dean of Students is responsible for reviewing eligibility of trustee candidates. According to Illinois State Statute, an eligible candidate for the student trustee position must be a resident of Illinois, have a grade point average of 2.5 or higher and be a full-time University student. Unrug said he met all of these qualifications.
