Ellis case will drag into May

By Eric Anderson

The case against former Illini football player Jody Ellis has been continued. Ellis’ plea was postponed until 11 a.m. on May 13, at which point he will have to appear in court.

“I continued it because I wanted to continue it,” said Ed Piraino, Ellis’ lawyer.

Ellis and Derrick McPhearson, another former Illini football player, were charged with four counts of burglary and two counts of theft. The charges came after a March 2, 2007 incident where the two were found to be in possession of stolen laptops, digital music players and wallets after a traffic accident.

McPhearson pleaded guilty to a felony theft charge on Feb. 22, for which he was sentenced to 180 days in jail and 30 months of probation, dropping the remaining charges.

Both men were removed from the football team following their arrests.
