LAS dean departs for Northwestern

By Kate Szyszka

The college of Liberal Arts and Sciences’ first female dean has announced her departure from the University to work at Northwestern University.

Sarah Mangelsdorf, who was appointed LAS dean in January 2006, oversaw growth within the college, including the additions of the School of Earth, Society and Environment and the programs of Languages, Literature and Culture, said Robin Kaler, University spokeswoman.

Mangelsdorf will begin her role as dean of the Weinberg College of Arts and Sciences at Northwestern in August.

“I think Northwestern feels very fortunate to have her come here,” Alan Cubbage, vice president of university relations at Northwestern, said of Mangelsdorf’s decision to begin work in Evanston, Ill.

“We had many good candidates, but she came across as a stellar candidate,” said Cubbage. “We are very excited.”

During her time in Champaign, Mangelsdorf worked as head of the psychology department and associate provost.

“We certainly hate to see her leave,” said Kaler. “Her contributions will be missed.”

Mangelsdorf could not be reached for comment and another official from LAS refused comment on the departure when contacted.
