C-U MTD board passes budget, removes stops

By Eric Heisig

The Champaign-Urbana Mass Transit District Board unanimously passed its budget for the fiscal year 2009 Wednesday afternoon.

The budget allocates $16.93 million for operations, $4.851 million for maintenance and $4.088 million for general administration. In addition, $873,000 was allocated for maintenance and other expenses for the Illinois Terminal. Appropriations totalled $30,665,000.

Public hearings were held for both the budget and proposed route changes for Fall 2008. No members of the public came forward and spoke.

One of the proposed changes is to get rid of two stops: one in front of the Illini Union and one at Matthews and Green streets. Instead, there will be a stop in the middle of them, on Circle Drive. A spokesperson for MTD said that all lines pass by the Union stop, with the exception of the gray and lavender lines.

The next board meeting will be July 30 at the Illinois Terminal, 45 East University Avenue, in Champaign.
