Cities begin to sort through flood complaints

By Kate Szyszka

Heavy rain this Sunday caused excess water in the streets of Champaign and Urbana, leading to traffic and sewage problems in Urbana.

The city of Urbana had to close the Vine St. viaduct at 10:30 a.m. to take care of excess water flooding the streets, said Rich Coyne, Operations Supervisor for the City of Urbana. The city was able to reopen the viaduct at 6:00 p.m.

“I’d say we’ve had some extra rainfall,” said Coyne. “We’ve had a little bit more than we’d normally expect.”

There were roughly 25 phone calls from residents regarding flood damage on Sunday, said Coyne. 15 of those calls were about street flooding, and ten calls were to report sewer sanitation problems.

“We have had quite a few storms that caused problems this year,” said Coyne.
