Driver in Tuesday night’s accident ticketed for right on red

By Mark Rivera

The bicyclist who was involved in an accident at the intersection of Sixth Street and Gregory Drive Tuesday night was transported to Carle Hospital with minor injuries, said Jeff Christensen, interim chief of the University Police Department.

Regarding who had the legal right of way, “the driver of the motor vehicle was cited for turning right on red where prohibited,” Christensen said.

Sgt. Joan Fiesta of the University Police Department said Tuesday night that the bicyclist was hit by a car while she was entering the intersection of Sixth and Gregory from the sidewalk.

University had temporarily blocked off Sixth Street from Gregory to Peabody drives while they took photographic evidence of the accident – a bicycle lodged under the front bumper of a silver Toyota.

It took two officers to dislodge the bike from under the vehicle.

Fiesta said that it is not illegal for bicyclists to ride on the sidewalk, although if they do, they must abide by all pedestrian laws. She added that police are still investigating who had the right of way in the incident.
