Voter registration comes to a close as election nears

By Kate Szyszka

As election day looms closer, University students prepare to vote for the candidate of their choice.

Tuesday marked the final day for citizens to register to vote in November’s presidential election.

Champaign County Clerk Mark Shelden said a good amount of students showed up to register at the kiosks set up on campus at the Undergraduate Library and Illini Union Tuesday night for last-minute registration.

“It could be as high as 1,000 students that registered last night at the two kiosks on campus,” said Sheldon. “I was there as a student clicked the button to register just as it hit midnight.”

Shelden said he was unsure as to how many people in the county registered to vote because registration processing will not be completed for another week or two.
