Greek community returns house treasures under ‘Amnesty’

By Hannah Hess

An exchange of stolen Greek property with no consequence for the thieves is the purpose of today’s “Amnesty Day” celebration.

The event, sponsored by the Panhellenic Council and Interfraternity Council takes place, in the “judgement-free environment” of an Armory building classroom from 6 to 8 p.m., said Erinn Mitchell, senior in LAS.

Mitchell, who sits on the Panhellenic Council Board, said the event serves a dual purpose by being scheduled so close to Homecoming weekend.

“We have a lot of alumni who come back and it’s always nice if they can see the memorabilia back in the house,” Mitchell said.

Memorabilia returned last semester ranged from trophies to thousand-dollar framed composite photos. During the spring semester, an estimated 30 items were returned to their proper home.

“The idea is simple,” said Mitchell. “Anything that doesn’t belong to a chapter can be returned without repercussions.”
