Parts of Neil Street closed in downtown Champaign

By Colleen Vest

Neil Street is closed today between Church and Park Streets because of damage done to the building at 215 N. Neil St., in Champaign.

The damage to the building is from the fire at the Metropolitan Building on Neil and Church Streets earlier this month.

“Until we can be assured that safety risks to our community are being met, we must act in this prudent manner,” said Deputy/ Fire Marshal Chief Tim Wild, in a press release.

All businesses on Neil Street will remain open and can be reached from Park Street, and sidewalks are open on the east side of the street.

Detour signs will be posted throughout downtown Champaign. State Street can be used as an alternate route for southbound Neil Street traffic, the press release stated.
