Champaign Public Library retires bookmobile

Budget tightening in Champaign’s Public Library system has pushed the local bookmobile service into retirement, according to a press release from the library.

The bookmobile, which reached just over 400 people each week, was frequently prone to mechanical failure and had rung up a maintenance bill exceeding $12,000. Figures on the press release show that use of the mobile service has been declining over the last decade, while use of the main library increased in the same period.

Nationwide bookmobile operation has been declining since its peak in 1962.
