The University was recently named one of America’s most disability-friendly colleges by a new book, “College Success for Students With Physical Disabilities,” published earlier in February.
Urbana’s campus was listed among four other schools as one of the few full-service colleges in the United States. These are colleges that provide such services as personal care, special transportation, independent living or disability management training, wheelchair repair, adaptive sports and other services to disabled students.
The book addresses the most pertinent concerns of students with physical disabilities on college campuses, including: living arrangements, transportation and classroom necessities.
Illinois has long held a tradition of welcoming disabled students. The wheelchair sports teams are some of the most competitive in the country, and the facilities on the University campus also serve as training grounds for the U.S. Paralympic team. Notable among these athletes is Joshua George, Olympic gold winner at the Beijing Paralympics.
