Sherman Hall fire ruled an accident

Update (1:30 p.m., Monday): Champaign fire officials have determined the cause of the fire was electrical and was an accident.

The total loss is being estimated at $10,000, according to a press release from the Champaign Fire Department.

Champaign and Urbana fire departments responded to the sixth floor at Sherman Hall on Sunday night at around 7:30 and extinguished the fire within 10 minutes.

Students were evacuated from the 13-story north wing of the building to the low-rise south wing and lobby.

A fire at Sherman Hall has been extinguished after it broke out Sunday evening.

Champaign Fire Department Captain John Barker said no injuries were reported and the cause of the fire is currently unknown.

Barker said the fire was reported on the sixth floor of the University residence hall.

Residents will likely be able to return to the building soon once the smoke is cleared.
