By Angelica Lavito

Champaign unveiled its budget plan for fiscal year 2014-2015 at a study session Tuesday night.

The budget’s theme is “Driving Prosperity” to reflect Champaign’s economic recovery from the recession. The Champaign City Council was given the budget overview to prepare for discussion at its May 20 meeting.

“We want to build upon our vibrant economy,” said City Manager Dorothy David. “There are signs all around us that the city of Champaign is recovering. You can’t go on campus without seeing construction.”

Finance Director Richard Schnuer discussed the focuses of the budget. The capital improvements plan is expected to total $32 million for fiscal year 2014-2015.

Projects could include the West Washington Street watershed draining, fixing White Street from Second to Wright streets, and Green Street reconstruction, Schnuer indicated at the study session.

Capital improvements and major funding needs will be discussed at a meeting on May 20, and the budget will be adopted on June 3.
