The results are in for this semester’s student referendum: the student body approved the proposal of a $1 student-initiated fee to be spent toward bicycle-related planning.

Grace Kyung, graduate student and sponsor of the fee, is ready to take the next step toward initiation.

“The next few major steps would be finding a committee to oversee the fee and talking to SFAC (Student Fee Advisory Committee) to see when the fee can be taken off cycle,” Kyung said. “If it is approved by Board of Trustees then it can take effect in 2016, if not, it will not take effect until 2017.”

Voter turnout stood at 6.7 percent of the student population — 2,103 students out of the 43,206 eligible voters. The referendum was met with a 72.5 percent approval rate.

“I think the voter turnout was great, I know this is an important issue for students and they want to voice their opinion on it and see changes being made,” Kyung said.

According to the referendum question, “the funds would include but not be limited to creating better bike infrastructure, expanding bike parking, creating safety courses and materials for bike encouragement and education, and creating a bike rental program.”
