Student with ties to San Bernadino to hold benefit

By Lilly Mashayek

A benefit concert for the victims of the San Bernardino shootings on Dec. 2 will be held on Saturday Dec. 12 at 7 at the Red Herring cafe in Urbana.

The concert is being organized by Justin McAdara, second-year DMA candidate inJazz Studies at the University, and the band Stream of Consciousness. The concert will consist mainly of performances from McAdara’s jazz group.

McAdara worked in social work for over ten years in Riverside County in California, which is close to San Bernardino County.

“I worked in the same building where the shooting happened,” McAdara said.

He said he had worked with a lot of people directly affected by the tragedy.

While McAdara said many music majors are already involved this event, he hopes people outside of that circle will attend as well.

McAdara is asking that anyone who attends the event to donate $5 or more as a cover charge, and that anyone who cannot attend the event donate a “virtual cover” charge of $5 directly to the San Bernardino United Relief Fund.

“This tragedy happened, these tragedies are happening. We need to all come together as a community and say, ‘this is unacceptable,’” he said.

McAdara said that coming out to the concert and donating to the cause is a great way to let the people affected by the shootings know that even though we are in Champaign-Urbana, we still care.

“Music is one of the best ways to deal with tragedy,” he said.
